Gopher Guidelines
The internet is a blessing and a curse… There is a ton of information floating in cyberspace, some of it useful, a lot of it garbage.  Your job is to:
  1. Respond to direct queries that I or a fellow student might make during our discussions, and
  2. find a few useful resources that are relevant to class discussion on the day you are the gopher.
More specifically:
  1. News items.  Look for news items from respected sources.
  2. No blog links unless the blogger has some clearly established expertise on the topics discussed and the material truly relevant.
  3. Learning modules from universities are generally welcome.  For example, if we happen to be discussing genetic screening, a video on how pre-implantation genetic screening is actually done would be cool.
  4. Movies.  Sure.  Why not?  For example “My Sister’s Keeper” is a film relevant to our discussion of “savior siblings.”
  5. Scholarly articles.  Yes, of course.  Google has a scholarly article search engine.   Pacific's online library has extensive search capabilities as well.
  6. Please include at least four thoughtful items you think relevant and potentially useful for our discussion.
  7. Each link should be accompanied by a brief description of the resource and why you included it in your list.  Never just post a list of websites…
  8. You will be responsible for tracking down answers to factual questions that come up in discussion.   For example we might decide we’d like to know how health care is funded in state prisons.  You’re the “gopher” for that.
  9. Gopher posts are due 24 hours after the class for which you are the gopher.
  10. FORMAT FOR GOPHER POSTS: "GOPHER (SUBJECT) (DATE) (YOUR LASTNAME)" (example: GOPHER ABORTION 8.17 MARENCO)
